Each drawing represents a contour map, at a scale of 1:25,000, of one of the 22 islets in Bikini Atoll and 41 islets in Enewetak Atoll - two sites in the Marshall Islands used by the United States for nuclear testing between 1946 and 1962, without consent from the local residents. The lines in these drawings are created by a burning incense stick touching the surface of very thin kozo paper. The maps are built up by layering this paper, each sheet with charred edges. In East Asian temples, incense is often used to commemorate the dead or to wish for a better future, lending a ritualistic significance to the process.
Dimension: 15x20x4 cm (6x8x1.5 inch) each panel, 63 panels in total.
